On December 12, 2022, Chris Beard, a college basketball coach for the Texas Longhorns, was arrested and booked at the Travis County jail.

He was arrested for assault on a family or household member, a third-degree felony in Texas.

According to the arrest affidavit, Beard allegedly choked his fiancée from behind, checking her breathing for about five seconds, and caused visible injuries such as a bite mark on her arm and an abrasion on her temple.

On Monday evening, Texas suspended Beard indefinitely and without pay. He had bail set at $10,000 and was released from Police custody after going before a judge in Austin Municipal Court on the same day.

Beard listed his House in Austin for sale on January 26, 2023, which had been listed in the Austin Police Department arrest affidavit.

On February 15, 2023, the third-degree felony charge was dismissed by Travis County District Attorney José Garza due to the evidence and the fiancée’s wishes not to prosecute.

Christopher Michael Beard was born in Marietta, Georgia, on February 18, 1973. He grew up in The Woodlands, Texas, where he completed his high school education at McCullough High School.

Chris’s passion for sports led him to pursue a Bachelor of Science in kinesiology from the University of Texas. During his time there, he served as a manager under former coach Tom Penders and graduated in 1995.

After earning his undergraduate degree, Chris pursued a Master of Education degree at Abilene Christian University.

During this time, he also worked as a graduate assistant. His education and experience laid the foundation for his future success as a basketball coach.

Chris began his coaching career as an assistant coach at the University of North Texas, where he worked from 1995 to 1997.

On March 27, 2016, he took the head coaching job at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

In 2017, Chris achieved one of his greatest coaching moments when he led the Texas Tech Red Raiders to upset the #7 West Virginia Mountaineers, securing the team’s first regular-season win over the Mountaineers in program history.
